Product Description
Alfalfa is native to southwest Asia, but is now grown all over the world. It has trifoliate leaves with long, narrow leaflets that are serrated at the tips, and purple flowers that can also be white or yellow.
Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the pea family that is often eaten as a garnish or infused into tea. It can also be added to soups and stews, or sprouted and eaten in salads and sandwiches. Alfalfa is high in protein, vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as calcium, potassium, and phosphorous. Alfalfa leaves are generally safe to take in the short term, but taking them in high doses or long term can be unsafe. Long-term use may cause reactions similar to lupus in some people. Alfalfa also interacts with warfarin (Coumadin) because it contains large amounts of vitamin K, which helps blood clot.
